About Mulgrave Estate

The Mulgrave Estate covers approximately 15,000 acres close by to the beautiful and historic town of Whitby in the North York Moors National Park.

It includes 4 miles of coastline between Sandsend and Runswick Bay and stretches south westwards inland for a distance of approximately 9 miles to Egton. The Estate comprises agricultural land, woodland, residential and commercial properties including holiday cottages, hotels, shops, pubs and restaurants and is the major property stakeholder within the local area. The Estate is managed from the Estate Office which is located in Lythe, one mile north-west of Sandsend.


The Mulgrave Estate has residential properties, commercial units, workshops, barns, agricultural holdings, allotments and grazing land available to rent from time to time.

Residential rental properties range from small, traditional stone built cottages to larger farmhouses.

The commercial properties on the Estate are mainly traditional stone buildings, but modern units are also available.


A delicate balance is maintained on the Mulgrave Estate between ensuring that our countryside management meets the needs of modern agricultural production and retaining Mulgrave’s unique historical character and landscape. This is achieved by utilising a partnership approach with the tenant farmers on the Estate.

There are in excess of fifty let holdings on the Mulgrave Estate which produce beef, sheep, arable and dairy products. This produce is available locally in butchers shops and delicatessens and also nationally as several farms on the Estate supply high quality beef through marketing groups.

The Estate also has a Home Farm, milking pedigree Ayrshire cattle. This is a prize winning herd and is considered to be one of the best in the Country.


Estate has become legendary in recent years.  Formal driven shooting takes place between September and the end of January and the shooting is recognised as being some of the best available in the UK.

The Mulgrave Estate employs four full time Gamekeepers  and one stalker who look after the wildlife on the Estate. The sporting activities are also a major contributor to the local economy throughout the season.

The home beat covers an area of c. 5500 acres of varied countryside and provides excellent sport of the highest standard over parkland, steep wooded valleys and ravines, and sea cliffs. The shoot has been extensively developed over the past 7 years and there are now 30 drives with nearly 200 acres of cover crops which can easily facilitate 2 consecutive days per week with respectable bags (double-gunning is the norm) without covering any ground twice.

One of the contributing factors that makes the shooting at Mulgrave so unique is the sheer variety of terrain and drives. The infrastructure is exceptional and there are two well equipped lunch huts, one in a truly romantic setting in Mulgrave Woods and one high on the cliffs looking over a gorge out to sea .
There are a number of strategically placed ponds around the shoot which provide both driven duck shooting and also flighting. Plumps of Woodcock arrive in November and December and Snipe also frequent some of the damper land.

Forestry and Timber Products

There are c.2500 acres of woodland on the Mulgrave Estate, comprising both softwood and hardwood plantations and historic woods.  The management policy for the woodlands has been set with both commercial forestry and landscape amenity as objectives.  The woodlands are managed under long term forest plans in a completely sustainable way and are a primary landscape feature. Although the routine management primary objective is timber production, a strong emphasis is placed on maintaining the beauty of the landscape and woodland biodiversity which provides the setting for sporting activities on the Estate.

Locally grown Christmas trees are available from the Estate sawmill in season.
